A Commissioned Oil Portrait Painting

I took this oil portrait on as a commission earlier in the year. I hadn’t painted a portrait in 18 years so I had to ‘brush’ up on a few things. Pun intended! The most challenging area to paint wasn’t the face but rather the uniform. I had first painted this as a sepia based painting and then started building up the tones in the painting. So who knows! you may just see some more oil paintings here.

These are two cocker spaniels, Maggie & Murphy, whom I had the pleasure to draw for a client. I also had drawn this client’s past two cocker spaniels named Tiffy & Taffy about 10 years ago.

I am always fascinated with drawing the characteristics of eyes….with some having bushy eyebrows, fine lines & wrinkles, and brown spots on their skin! lol. It does give you a lot of practice at seeing different textures in the skin and how light and shadow can play a major roll in achieving a realistic look to it.

The smooth skin of baby’s hands and those delicate fingers that seem to clutch anything it can touch – including your hair if you’re not too careful! Baby’s skin is great practice for shading with a pencil and in layering your shades.
